Projet CASDAR IRRADIANCE

IRRADIANCE

The CASDAR IRRADIANCE project (2018–2022), part of the STRATège Joint Technology Unit (UMT) program, aims to develop a new cropping system designed to meet these urban consumer expectations. To achieve this, the first step was to produce compact, well-branched young plants in a much shorter timeframe by appropriately using artificial light (i.e., emitting wavelengths with photomorphogenetic effects) within closed climate chambers.

Initial work established a lighting strategy to obtain compact and well-branched young plants, characterized by the inclusion of far-red light. However, a strong interaction between genotype and light quality was observed.

Cultivation of the young plants produced in this manner was continued in greenhouses at the ASTREDHOR Sud-Ouest and Arexhor Pays-de-la-Loire stations to account for the genotype-by-environment interaction. A positive effect of this new cropping system was demonstrated on rose architecture, resulting in more branched commercial plants.

This new cropping system should help satisfy urban consumer expectations while addressing environmental constraints (reduction of chemical inputs) and economic challenges (lower production costs). To ensure the broad applicability of this work, a collaboration with a growers' cooperative will be established during the final phase of the project to evaluate the new cropping system on other horticultural crops. Finally, a techno-economic feasibility study will be conducted at a pre-industrial scale to assess its potential application in commercial production.
